Job Description

TL; DR

🤓 We are seeking a Founding Lead/Staff AI engineer with (1) Strong previous experience in Machine Learning from data exploration, modeling & experimentation to deployment and/or (2) Recent exposure to LLMs and their paradigms (prompting, RAG, fine-tuning, etc.)

🚀 This is an Applied AI position and not a pure research/science one: We ship things in production.

⚒️ This is an Individual Contributor position not a manager position: You will be the sole owner of AI within the company, make decisions, build things and lead all AI efforts.

:steerlab-logo: We’re a lean, business-driven, pragmatic team of builders - no bullsh*t ceremonies or recurrent meetings just smart (and humble) people solving real problems.

Your core mission

You will be working directly with the founders building advanced AI systems that combine prompting, fine-tuning, search and retrieval engines, LLMs, agents and tools.

What’s in it for you?

  • Join the founding team during an exciting phase phase where you can shape and own a core part of the company, freedom to make decisions and shape things your way with a direct impact on customers and the company’s growth

  • Tackle exciting challenges using the latest technology and advancements in AI and machine learning. You get to go beyond AI POCs and build something that will be used daily by end users

  • No bullsh*t culture: No repetitive blocked meetings in your agenda, no stand ups, no reporting. We sync when we need to sync, we meet on-site for social reasons and the rest of the time we’re building

  • Work alongside a high velocity smart yet humble team. We’re a highly efficient, experienced (~7 years each) small team focusing on delivering high quality software at a rapid pace.

  • Receive an attractive compensation package with a competitive salary and the opportunity for equity.

Preferred Experience

We're looking for someone with:

  • An AI/ML Background: Mathematical/Statistical background or previous experience in ML roles. Minimum 4-5 years of experience.

  • A strong level of curiosity and exploration balanced with the ability to deliver results

  • The ability to tinker with LLMs and new paradigms from prompting, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to fine-tuning

  • A strong level of critical thinking to experiment, analyze results and draw conclusions.

  • Ability to think about ML holistically: From data preparation, to model experimentation to deployment. i.e: This is an Applied AI position and not a pure research/science one: We ship ML code in production.

  • Technical background: Python, TypeScript, functional programming, Git, VectorDBs, high level knowledge of any cloud (AWS/Azure or GCP).

Recruitment Process

Our hiring process is designed to identify engineers who thrive in fast paced environments, demonstrate strong ownership and value solving real customer problems. The process is as follows:

  1. Initial Interview (15 min): Conducted by our CTO, this conversation helps us understand your background, share more about the role and company and assess if we (and you) want to move forward.

  2. Technical deep dive (45min-1h each): You’ll have 2 in-person sessions, one with our CTO and another with our Lead Engineer. These include a mix of technical questions and live coding and problem solving sessions.

  3. Reference check: We’ll ask for 1-2 references from your network: A previous employer, an engineer you worked with, a mentor. Anyone who can share more about you.

  4. Cultural fit (30 min each): Each company is different, we check for culture fit on both ends: Do you align with our values and do we align with what you’re looking for. We’ll have 3 discussions, 30 min each with different members of the team

Once the hiring process is done, we’ll meet for 30min to discuss the offer and next steps.
